Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artwork and inspiration. The aunt she had was a nurse who worked shifts at night so that she could commit all daytime hours to reading, art as well as theater, among other things. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered that art can be an effective way to spread the cause of activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of social issues and taught the importance of speaking up through the arts. The summers DuVernay spent there led her to direct a movie that focused on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her school. DuVernay began as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being commissioned to observe the house of one member of the jury as well as go through their garbage. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she chose to go into the public relations business. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio, right after graduating from college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. In addition, she started various marketing and lifestyle websites for the urban beauty industry, including the Urban Beauty Collective.
